01 / THE BUYING QUESTION
How should each shaft interface be referenced so the inspection report reflects the intended assembly?
02 / READ THE GEOMETRY
Details that shape
the requirement.
Functional diameters
Mark which shaft sections support or locate a mating part. Give the specified fits for those sections and identify clearance diameters separately.
Shoulders along the axis
Identify the seating faces that establish axial position. Review distances between those faces as an assembly relationship, including any intervening washer or spacer.
Circumferential grooves
Define each groove by its intended purpose, section and position. Supply the mating retaining component where relevant instead of leaving its compatibility to visual interpretation.

What matters
to your team?
Define the functional interfaces.
Avoid applying one generic precision note to the whole shaft. Separate fit, axial location and geometric alignment so each can be reviewed.
Discuss your engineering requirementsMake the quotation comparable.
Ask for a quotation tied to the same material, finish and inspection scope. Discuss changes to groove or shoulder details before comparison.
Discuss your purchasing requirementsAgree the acceptance evidence.
Record the support and reference arrangement used for geometric checks. Keep measurements distinguishable from observations made during a trial assembly.
Discuss your quality requirements03 / A PART-SPECIFIC REVIEW
From feature
to machining brief.
01Build an interface map
Annotate the drawing with the mating components and the surfaces that establish the working axis. Include the conditions under which alignment or rotation will be assessed.
02Resolve dimensions and geometry
Review size requirements separately from the geometric relationships between sections. Identify the datum setup for any runout requirement and request only the controls that the function needs.
03Set the sample handover
Agree dimensional characteristics, groove checks and any assembly trial before making samples. Keep the approved drawing, material requirement and measured results together for the first production review.
04 / BEFORE SAMPLE APPROVAL
Agree what
acceptance will show.
Check identified diameters and axial shoulder locations using the agreed references.
Verify groove section and location against the specified retaining interface.
Report required geometric checks with their datum setup and part identification.
INSPECTION PLANNING WORKSHEET
Approve the shaft against the assembly it locates.
Connect the locating diameters, shoulders and grooves to the same assembly references before deciding what the sample report should show.
Planning worksheet · not a measured report01Locating diameters
What to define
Identify the mating fit and each functional diameter on the drawing.
Record to agree
Characteristic IDs, specified limits and individual dimensional readings.
02Shoulder distances
What to define
Select the seating reference and the distances that establish axial position.
Record to agree
Readings tied to the nominated reference and drawing revision.
03Retaining grooves
What to define
Define groove section, position and the mating retaining component.
Record to agree
Agreed groove checks with the sample identification.
04Geometric relationships
What to define
State any required runout or alignment control and its datum setup.
Record to agree
The required result and the setup used for that check.
CARRY APPROVAL INTO THE ORDER
- 01
Protect the interfaces
Agree protection for locating diameters, shoulders and groove edges.
- 02
Identify the batch
Link samples and production lots to the drawing revision and required records.
- 03
Control the next release
Review changes to fit, geometry or inspection scope before the next order.
Measurement methods, acceptance limits and included records are agreed against your drawing before sampling.
