Brass pin: locating diameters and insertion edges

A slender stepped pin needs more than an overall length. Use this brass automatic-lathe example to define where the part locates, how it enters the assembly, and which shoulders establish its final position.

01 / THE BUYING QUESTION

Which pin features control insertion and location, and which dimensions simply provide clearance?

02 / READ THE GEOMETRY

Details that shape
the requirement.

01

Locating sections

Separate the diameters that locate the pin from sections that only pass through a clearance hole. Identify each mating component and its relevant drawing revision.

02

Shoulder positions

Identify the shoulder that stops insertion, then dimension the other functional sections from that reference. Include the assembled projection rather than relying only on overall length.

03

Entry and handling edges

Show the required entry shape and the edges that must remain sharp or receive a break. Include handling constraints for the slender sections during packing and assembly.

ONE PART. THREE BUYING DECISIONS.

What matters
to your team?

Define the functional interfaces.

State the desired locating function before selecting a fit. Identify whether the mating part is also changing during the development cycle.

03 / A PART-SPECIFIC REVIEW

From feature
to machining brief.

01Map the assembly sequence

Provide a section or marked assembly view showing insertion direction, support points and final seating. Explain whether the pin is retained by fit, another component or a separate operation.

02Define the finished pin

Specify brass grade, material condition and any finish required. Review the critical diameters and shoulder relationships in the condition in which the receiving team will measure the part.

03Agree a focused sample review

Choose the features for the dimensional report and any trial assembly using a nominated mating part. Record the trial conditions and acceptance decision separately from the dimensional readings.

04 / BEFORE SAMPLE APPROVAL

Agree what
acceptance will show.

  • Measure the nominated locating diameters and shoulder positions from the agreed reference.
  • Check entry edges and contact surfaces for the specified burr and damage limits.
  • Record drawing revision, sample identification and any agreed assembly-check conditions.

INSPECTION PLANNING WORKSHEET

Make insertion, seating and handling part of approval.

A small pin needs a clear stopping reference and edge condition. Define the mechanical checks alongside any required mating-part trial.

Planning worksheet · not a measured report
01Locating sections

What to define

Mark the diameters that locate the pin and separate clearance sections.

Record to agree

Characteristic IDs and dimensional readings for the nominated sections.

02Stopping shoulder

What to define

Define the seating face, insertion depth and relevant shoulder distances.

Record to agree

Readings from the agreed reference with the sample identification.

03Entry edges

What to define

State the required entry form, burr acceptance and protected surfaces.

Record to agree

The agreed visual or dimensional check and its viewing conditions.

04Assembly trial

What to define

Identify the mating part, revision and trial conditions if a trial is needed.

Record to agree

A separate assembly observation and approval decision.

CARRY APPROVAL INTO THE ORDER

  1. 01

    Protect slender features

Agree support, separation and protection of contact surfaces in transit.

  2. 02

    Separate sample and lot

Connect each sample or production lot to its material and drawing revision.

  3. 03

    Carry approval forward

Keep agreed insertion, edge and packing requirements in the next release.
