Threaded coupling: define engagement and cross-hole edges

An external thread and a transverse hole bring different review questions into one coupling. Use this stainless steel reference to specify the mating thread, installation access and internal edge condition before comparing manufacturing and inspection proposals.

01 / THE BUYING QUESTION

What must the external thread connect to, and how will the cross-hole be used and inspected?

02 / READ THE GEOMETRY

Details that shape
the requirement.

01

External thread

State the full thread designation, required engagement and applicable gauging requirement. Show the mating component and distinguish the threaded length from the overall projecting length.

02

Body and installation clearance

Use the larger cylindrical body to identify the intended seating and handling surfaces. Include available installation space and any tool contact requirements in the review.

03

Transverse hole

Explain whether the cross-hole serves assembly, retention, flow or another purpose. Its function determines the positional, edge and internal access questions to resolve.

ONE PART. THREE BUYING DECISIONS.

What matters
to your team?

Define the functional interfaces.

Identify the sealing principle when applicable. Do not let the thread designation stand in for a complete connection and assembly specification.

03 / A PART-SPECIFIC REVIEW

From feature
to machining brief.

01Define the connection as a pair

Review the coupling together with the mating component. If the assembly must seal, identify the actual sealing interface and specify the functional test separately from thread inspection.

02Review intersecting features

Use a section view to show where the transverse hole meets other internal geometry. Agree which intersections need edge treatment and how those areas will be checked.

03Agree the quote and evidence scope

Request a proposal covering the exact stainless grade, thread requirement, hole treatment and inspection records. Keep any assembly or leak test explicitly identified with its conditions and responsible party.

04 / BEFORE SAMPLE APPROVAL

Agree what
acceptance will show.

  • Check the specified thread using the agreed method and acceptance requirement.
  • Verify cross-hole size, position and required edge condition.
  • Record the specified sealing or assembly test separately when included in the scope.
