Start with the two interfaces around a bushing
A shaft-and-bushing fit review normally involves two mating pairs: the shaft against the bushing bore, and the bushing outside surface against its housing. Each pair can have a different job. The shaft may slide or rotate while the bushing must remain located in the housing.
Mark the intended motion, retention and installation method before choosing tolerance classes. Include the mating-part limits or controlled drawing references. A bushing drawing with only its own bore and outside diameter leaves the supplier without the full assembly requirement. State whether you are purchasing a free component, an installed bushing or an assembled and checked unit.
Read the clearance interval before choosing a fit
For a basic diametral size comparison, let Dmin and Dmax be the permitted hole limits, and dmin and dmax the permitted shaft limits. The smallest size-based clearance is Dmin minus dmax; the largest is Dmax minus dmin. Use one unit throughout and identify the condition in which the limits apply.
An entirely positive interval indicates size-based clearance; an entirely negative interval indicates interference. An interval spanning zero permits either result, while a zero boundary means contact is possible at that limit. This arithmetic compares size limits only. It does not predict assembly force, operating clearance after installation, surface behaviour or service life.

- Smallest and largest diametral difference: [calculated interval].
- Required assembly behaviour: [slide, rotate, locate or retain].
- Additional conditions to evaluate: [finish, form, installation and operating environment].
Use a complete size and tolerance specification
ISO 286-1 describes the code system and terminology for linear-size tolerances and fits; ISO 286-2 gives limit deviations for commonly used hole and shaft tolerance classes. Specify the nominal size, applicable standard and edition, and the intended class for each mating feature. Obtain the corresponding limits from the applicable reference rather than copying a value from a different size range.
A label such as H7/g6 should not become an automatic recommendation for every guide. If explicit limits and a class designation both appear, check that they agree. The designer must select a suitable specification for the intended load, motion, materials and installation. This article supplies no universal fit class or numerical clearance recommendation.
Identify the condition in which the fit is accepted
Specify whether the bore is checked before or after the bushing is installed. Where the assembled condition matters, provide the housing requirement, installation arrangement and the inspection state to agree. Treat an uninstalled-bushing measurement and an assembled-bore measurement as different records.
Clarify whether mating dimensions apply after plating, other surface treatment or a subsequent finishing operation. Include any approved allowance and which party completes the final operation. Provide operating temperature, lubrication and other relevant service conditions for engineering review; room-condition size limits alone do not validate the operating assembly.
Keep size, geometry and surface requirements explicit
ISO 286-1 describes fits without constraints on orientation and location. ISO 286-2 also explains why diameter tolerances may need additional geometric and surface requirements to control function. A shaft fitting into a short bore does not demonstrate alignment through a longer guide or across separated supports.
Identify the datum surfaces used to locate the assembly and specify the geometric controls that the design actually requires. Use the drawing standard consistently; ASME Y14.5 provides rules for stating and interpreting geometric requirements. Do not mix assumptions from different systems without resolving how the drawing will be interpreted.
Give the sample review a repeatable setup
Connect each selected diameter or relationship to a characteristic identifier. Agree the measuring method, relevant locations, support and part condition. Where an assembly trial is required, identify the mating part and revision and define the observation or measurement that constitutes acceptance.
Send Chengshuo the shaft, bushing and housing interfaces together with sample quantities and required records. The guide-bushing and shaft references below illustrate forms for discussion; they do not establish an accepted fit, measured tolerance or wear result for your assembly.
