Give the supplier the mating interface

Identify the contact pin as a rigid contact, locating terminal or another specified part of the assembly. Show its mating feature, insertion direction, engagement length, contact zone and the shoulder or housing surface that locates it. Provide a permitted assembly section or interface drawing when the complete assembly cannot be shared.

Name the design revision and clarify whether the scope is the machined component or also includes separately specified hardware or assembly. When a spring-loaded arrangement is involved, identify the required individual component and its supplied interfaces in the purchase request.

Define functional features in the delivered state

Dimension the active tip, functional diameters, shoulders and retention features from the references chosen by the drawing owner. Where threads, grooves or press-fit features are used, identify the applicable dimensions and acceptance checks. Mark contact areas that require a particular edge or handling condition.

If a coating follows machining, specify the treatment, covered or masked areas and which dimensions apply after finishing. Provide the finish specification and any requested finish documentation. Use a controlled drawing revision for all sample and production quotations.

Name the material and approved alternatives

Give the exact alloy grade, material condition and any applicable specification. Identify the owner who can approve an alternative if the named grade is unavailable. Request material records and finish documents to the extent needed for your acceptance process.

The published brass conductive pillar reference shows a machined contact form; use it to discuss your geometry and specify the grade and treatment required by your own design. Coordinate the surface requirement with the connector design and its actual assembly environment.

Assign mechanical and electrical tests

Separate the machined-part inspection from the agreed tests of the assembled contact system. Identify the party that provides the mating part, assembles the sample and performs any contact-resistance, insertion-force or endurance evaluation. State the conditions, acceptance limits and required records for each requested test.

IEC 60512-2-1 describes a millivolt-level contact-resistance method for a pair of mated contacts or a contact and measuring gauge. When that method is specified for a project, cite the applicable document and agree the actual test arrangement and responsible party. The public description is background for defining a request.

Agree sample inspection and change control

Identify feature numbers for diameter, length, tip or shoulder requirements and agree the measurement approach, final condition and sample quantity. If material, plating or assembly checks require separate records, list the deliverables and the reviewer for each one.

Keep the approved drawing, sample result and any accepted deviation together. For a repeat order, compare the new material, finish, quantities, mating interface and inspection scope with the approved release. The sample-to-repeat-order guide provides a practical handover.

Package the machining request

Provide a part drawing and, where permitted, a model or mating section, material grade, final treatment, sample and production quantities, destination and target date. Identify a critical characteristic or project-specific test by its drawing reference and acceptance criteria.

Review the copper stepped shaft and split contact pin for related forms. Use the material and finish checklist, then send your controlled request through the machining RFQ.

Frequently asked purchasing questions

What information is needed for a custom contact pin enquiry?

Provide the controlled drawing, mating interface, material grade, finish, sample and production quantities, required inspection records and delivery target.

How should the contact area be specified?

Identify the active contact zone, engagement length, tip geometry, mating interface and the surface condition required in the delivered part.

Can the contact material be proposed as an alternative?

You can request an alternative to be identified separately. The drawing owner should approve the material and delivered condition before the alternative becomes the order basis.

What should the machining sample report include?

Agree the feature numbers, measured locations, sample identity, drawing revision, final condition and results. List any separately requested material or finish records.

Who performs contact-resistance or endurance testing?

Name the responsible party, mating parts, test arrangement, conditions, acceptance limits and records in the request. These are separate items to agree for the assembly.

How do I repeat an approved contact order?

Reference the accepted sample and drawing revision, then identify changes to the material, finish, mating interface, quantity or inspection scope before the new release.
